Obviously this is just for ladies!
Let me introduce you to my new friend.
I thought that as I am nearing fifty it was too late to bother with such things, but getting increasingly concerned about the health hazards of conventional sanitary ware, and not being able to afford organic versions, or fancy making my own, I looked more seriously into the menstrual cup. I am so glad I did!
Basically, the chemicals and nasties used to make conventional protective sanitary products muck up our hormone balance. In particular they can contribute to estrogen dominance. You can read all about ladies hormones here.
Ladies - if you ever liked the thought of tampons, but don't like the dryness or the thought of those synthetic fibres in a very sensitive part of your body - then look no further. The menstrual cup takes the mess out of menstruation, with no health hazards to worry about. In fact, the biggest health hazard is forgetting it's there! Basically, instead of absorbing the flow, it catches it and you dispose of it down the lavatory pan. If your flow is heavy - you can monitor exactly how much you lose as the cup has a measuring guide on it.
It can take a bit of getting use to. There is plenty of advice out there to help. The 'Mooncup' website is very helpful especially. They suggest giving it 3 cycles to become proficient. I found it took much less time.
Advantages? Well, when you are in peri-menopause, one always feels the need to carry around a lot of protection, especially when flow and regularity are unpredictable. With a menstrual cup, no need to carry around bulky packs - one little cup, in its own little bag and you are ready for anything!
The 'Mooncup' can be bought in Boots in the UK, if you are in a hurry. If you can wait, buying on line is cheaper. There are two sizes A and B, Make sure you get the right one.
